Shiki Theatre Company was founded on
14 July 1953 with the goal of performing the works by the contemporary French
playwrights Jean Giraudoux and Jean Anouilh because the ten founding members,
with an average of 21 years old, discovered in their works the ideal theatre to
seek. In January 1954, Shiki Theatre Company debuted with Jean Anouilh's "ARDELE
ou LA MARGUERITE." Although we had a total of only 15 performances of 3 plays
in the year, we actually opened a new era in the history of the Japanese theatre
world, supported by many young poets, writers, musicians and artists. Since then,
these French writers' plays such as ONDINE, TESSA (Giraudoux), L'ALOUETTE and
ULYDICE (Anouilh) have been repeatedly produced.

It is very natural that Shiki Theatre
Company challenged Western classic plays as the time went. We depict from a contemporary
viewpoint the universal human truths that underlie the works by Shakespeare, Racine,
Moliere and others. In addition, we have an abundant repertoire of foreign modern
plays, which straightforward tackle the serious dilemma of the modern society,
like EQUUS, THE ELEPHANT MAN, WHOSE LIFE IS IT ANYWAY? and SLEUTH.
