2005 marked the 52th anniversary of Shiki Theatre Company. Now, with 8 home
theatres throughout Japan, we have over 3,000 performances per year, i.e.
an average of 8 performances per day. Actually, it is often the case that
12 productions are running simultaneously in the country. The number of
performances is not only incomparable in Japan but also prominent in the
world.
This outstanding achievement was not made in a short time. When the company was founded, there were a very limited number of theatre-goers in Japan, although we have a variety of traditional performing arts. We have made steady efforts to retrieve theatre in the Japanese life, avoiding the cultural centralization.
We also undertake a variety of projects to promote cultural exchange with foreign countries. These projects include not only performing our productions abroad but also exchanging personal and intellectual resources with the excellent theatrical groups abroad and accommodating foreign actors and technical staff for training.
Shiki Theatre Company consists of more than 1,000 people --- actors, technical and management staff, all of whom devote his/her talent and professional expertise to the activities of the company.
